Australia’s first brewer, James Squire, began his Australian story as a convict bound for our shores in the first fleet.  England’s loss was Australia’s gain.  Initially brewing on the sly whilst still a convict, Squire’s exploits were soon discovered and so he began brewing for a certain General and Colonel.  Granted a 30 acre plot upon his release Squire immediately set about planting hops.  The first James Squire brewery was established in 1806 producing beer of a truly fine quality and flavour.  Over 200 years later the James Squire brewing tradition continues at the Portland Hotel.

The James Squire Brewhouse showcases the experience, life and times of James Squire.  The Brewhouse offers the entire Squire range and is Melbourne CBD's only working micro brewery producing handcrafted ales brewed on site as well as those brewed by the Malt Shovel Brewery.  

The Brewers Lounge sits alongside our micro brewery and provides a fine backdrop for private functions and parties.  Brewery tours can be arranged by appointment.
